Software Skills

Database Packages I have broad-based database knowledge and skills, developed, beginning in 1985, with dBase II and continuing through different versions of dBase and Paradox. Currently, my expertise in Microsoft Access extends from sophisticated end-user skills through the application development process. I have developed several Access applications and provided support to users. I have conducted training classes in Microsoft Access and emphasize good database design in my database classes.
Word Processors My knowledge and experience using word processors is extensive. I learned Wordstar in the 1980's and followed the product evolution since then. I have expert knowledge of both basics and special features in Microsoft Word. I have broad experience in training in this area and am particularly effective at helping users understand the underlying concepts in both products.
Spreadsheets I have used spreadsheets extensively, beginning with Lotus 1-2-3 and continuing to Quattro Pro and Excel. I have used basic and advanced features and have conducted many classes and training sessions in the use of spreadsheets. One of the most important concepts I convey is that spreadsheets must be thoughtfully designed and audited in order to have confidence in their usefulness as a forecasting tool.
Presentation Packages I am well versed in Microsoft PowerPoint. I have designed presentations for use in classes and workshops, and have also developed and taught a college course in this package. My emphasis in training with this package is on content and communication. Since I have a background and an advanced degree in English, I am aware that many who learn the technical skills necessary to produce electronic presentations may neglect the overall point of a presentation, that is to communicate effectively with an audience. I therefore stress techniques for achieving effective communication.
Operating Systems Since the early days of command line driven DOS through the present WYSIWYG interface of Windows, I have been using operating systems effectively and training users to do the same. During the period when Windows had many limitations, I used PC Tools and conducted training classes in that product, as well as doing the technical edit on a Que book about PC Tools. I try to ensure that students in a class on operating systems learn things that they most likely have not and will not discover on their own.
Programming I have taken courses in COBOL, Pascal, Assembly, BASIC, and C++. I have used database products to develop end-user database applications. I have taught a class in beginning programming using C++, where the objective was to develop programming concepts and skills. My emphasis in this class is always the logic behind the code.
