DVM 0031 - Pre-Algebra

This  hybrid course becomes available on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at http://pgcconline.blackboard.com, the campus Blackboard website. If this is your first online or hybrid course, then you should attend the ELearning Orientation on August 25th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm in CAT 110. Directions for starting the course will be on the course homepage on Blackboard.

During the first week there are a number of activities to help you navigate the course. Complete all of the Start Here activities on Blackboard before starting the mathematics assignments on EDUCOSOFT.  You are expected to attend all of the weekly on-campus sessions for the class, held on Tuesdays, 6:00-7:40 p.m. in TZ (Temporary Bldg), Room 109.

The following items are needed for the course.

  1.  Purchase your courseware and register online for the online courseware. The text, Pre-Algebra, 6th edition, by Sharma, published by EDUCO International, with an online registration code, is available in the college bookstore. I do not require that you buy the text. The online courseware is required. If you buy the textbook at the bookstore, the code for the online text is included, in the back cover. If you choose to work entirely online, then you can go directly to www.educosoft.com and purchase the online courseware only. The e-book version of the paper textbook is available in the online courseware.
  2. Obtain your student ID and password through OwlLink. Click here.
  3. You will need your campus Owlmail email address in order to register for either OwlLink or EDUCOsoft. Click here to activate your Owlmail email. Owlmail is required for all  course-related email communication.
  4. Verify that you have high speed internet access: DSL, cable or fiber optic. The courseware will not work on slow speed internet connections. You will need to be able to use the courseware everyday for 1.5 - 2 hours (about 10 hours each week).
Important Notice:
All chapter tests for this course will be taken in the Student Assessment Services Center, Bladen Hall Room 100. Homework, quizzes, tests and lab work are  all online.

Online and hybrid courses are not easier. Usually, they take more time than the same course taught on campus. In a typical math class, the instructor demonstrates all processes. In an online or hybrid course, you must often read, work through guided problems online, and watch animated and video lectures in order to understand the process. The burden is on you to determine when you understand and to find help if you don't. Because more reading is involved, it is very important to stay on task. It is very hard to catch up if you fall behind.
