Orientation for DVM 0030 Online will be held on
Wednesday, January 20th, 7:30 - 8:30 pm in Bladen Hall  Room 207 at the Largo Campus. If this is your first online course, then you should also attend the Distance Learning Orientation at 6:00 pm in the Rennie Forum (next to the College Bookstore).

The following items should be completed before the orientation session if possible.

  1.  Purchase your text or courseware and register online for the online courseware.
    Pre-Algebra, 6th edition
, by Sharma and King, published by EDUCO International, with an online registration code, is available in the college bookstore. If you choose to work entirely online, using the animated version of the textbook online, then you can go directly to www.educosoft.com and purchase the online courseware only. The e-book is not needed.

Guided Notes for Pre-Algebra, 5th Edition, available in the college bookstore.

  2. Obtain your student ID and password for OwlLink. Click here. This ID is also used for Blackboard in online courses.

  3. You will need an student email account (Owl Mail) in order to register for EDUCOsoft. If you do not have one, you can get one at http://live.pgcc.edu/.
  4. Verify that you have high speed internet access: DSL, cable or fiber optic. The courseware will not work on slow speed internet connections. You will need to be able to use the courseware everyday for 1.5 - 2.5 hours (13-15 hours each week). For most students that many hours online is impossible if campus computers need to be used. (Computer labs are located in Marlboro 2129, in Bladen Hall, and in the Center for Advanced  Technology.)
Important Notice:
All exams for this course will be taken in the Student Assessment Services Center, Bladen Hall Room 100. Homework, quizzes, tests and other work are  all online.

Homework will be due weekly and should be a daily learning activity. You should expect approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours of homework each day, including review activities, in order to be successful in the course.

Online courses are not easier. In a typical math class, the instructor demonstrates a process. In this online course, you must read, work through guided problems online, and watch animated and video lectures in order to understand the process. The burden is on you to determine when you understand and to find help if you don't. Because so much reading is involved, it is very important to stay on task. It is very hard to catch up if you fall behind.

Required Materials.
Pre-Algebra, 6th Edition by Sharma and King, published by EDUCO. The student may opt not to purchase the textbook, instead using only the online courseware .
Guided Notes for Pre-Algebra, 5th or 6th Edition. Available in the college bookstore and by downloading from the course website.
The TI 84 Plus or TI 83 Plus graphing calculator (also to be used in MAT 1040) or a scientific calculator with both a fraction key [a b/c] and parentheses keys. If you register after purchasing the book, you will need the registration code provided with the book. If you do not purchase the book, you can still register online using a major credit card. If you do not have a credit card, you can register online, but registration will not be confirmed until your mailed payment is received by EDUCO.
