COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Painting I is a foundation course which focuses on fundamental techniques and theories of painting.  Instruction is given in the basic use of painting materials and techniques.  Students explore the basic elements of painting: color, line, and form, as a means to create interesting compositions, manipulate space, and develop solid forms.

Learning to evaluate paintings is as important as producing paintings.  Class critiques will assist the student in learning to read and discuss their own work, as well as their fellow students’ work.

This course is designed for beginners with little or no experience painting.  Proficiency in drawing is beneficial but not critical to successful completion of the course.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

·        Understand and use the basic vocabulary of painting.

·        Employ basic skills in the use of painting media, materials and techniques.

·        Understand and apply basic fundamentals of color theory with particular emphasis on relativity of color.

·        Create original paintings through preparation of support, design of composition, and application of paint.

·        Critique paintings with cognitive awareness of the organization of elements of art and specific understanding of color and its application.

·        Analyze historic and contemporary paintings based upon direct observation of the artist’s use of form, subject matter and content.

Class Attendance:

Attached is a written statement of the Art Department’s attendance requirements for laboratory classes. Student participation is an important element in this class and excessive absences are viewed accordingly.

Class Policies:

Class begins promptly and students are expected to come prepared with all their materials.  Students are responsible to see that their area is left neater than it was upon arrival. Place discarded materials in the wastebasket.  Keep the sink area clear of paper towels and jars.  Never dispose of waste medium in the sink.  Paint and medium are hazardous materials, clog the pipes and stop up the sink. A special blue container is provided in the room for dirty medium. Clean palette with paper towels and place towels in the wastebasket.  Place palette in a numbered slot on the designated shelf.  Find that number on the paper next to the shelf and write your name beside it.  That will be your slot for the remainder of the semester.

The sounding of devices during class is very distracting to you, the other students, and the instructor.  Program your cell phones, pagers and beepers in a vibrate mode during all class times (See attached Owl Alert information).

Required Book:          A GIACOMETTI PORTRAIT, James Lord

I will assign selected readings and writing exercises throughout the semester.

*Important: This syllabus may be amended during the course of the semester.  If an amendment is necessary, the changes will be put in writing ahead of time and each student will receive a copy.
