EDU 210: Processes and Acquisition of Reading
Prerequisite: College-wide Reading Placement or Waiver

Description:
Students will construct an understanding of the language and cognitive precursors to reading acquisition and demonstrate knowledge of word recognition and the reading acquisition process. Students will demonstrate their understanding of the role of experiential background, prior knowledge, motivation, and personal significance to developing readers.

Course Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Describe how historical and current brain research relates to the acquisition of reading.
  2. Explain the relationship and role of each component of language acquisition as it relates to reading.
  3. Explain the interactive nature of the reading process.
  4. Describe the effects of phonemic awareness on developing readers.
  5. Explain the essential connection of language development, reading acquisition, and writing.
