Guide for
Practical Nurse Program (PN)
The LPN uses the nursing process to collect
and organize relevant health care data and assist in the identification
of the health needs/problems of clients throughout their lifespan and
in a variety of settings. The entry-level licensed practical nurse,
under appropriate supervision, coordinates and provides care to meet
the needs of clients with commonly occurring health problems having
predictable outcomes.
Graduates of Prince George's
Community College's LPN program earn a certificate and are eligible to
take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN). In
recent years, one hundred percent (100%) of Prince George's
Community College's PN graduates have passed the NCLEX-PN on the first
attempt. Successful completion of the exam is required to
practice nursing.
Practical
Nursing Program
Certification
The
Practical Nurse (PN) earns a certificate and is prepared to function as
a direct care giver under the supervision of other licensed health
professionals primarily in structured settings such as hospitals and
nursing homes. Practical nurses provide care to clients with
common, well-defined health problems. Students complete two
semesters and one summer of study. The total number of credits
required to earn the certificate is 46. The course will include
fundamental concepts in nursing, dosage calculations, critical thinking
in nursing situations, test-taking skills, and microbiology concepts
related to infection control. To be accepted into NUR 100,
students must have received "C" or better in EGL 101, BIO
205, and have a math placement score for MAT 112. They must also
have a cumulative GPA in required General Education courses of 2.5 or
higher with no grade lower than a "C". The graduate is
eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for
Practical Nurses. (The total number of credits required for
certification is 46.) The student must petition by
April 1 for fall admission. All prerequisite courses must be
