START: A STUDENT RESEARCH CONFERENCE

by Robin Hailstorks, Title III Activities Coordinator

This year’s START conference is scheduled for Monday, April 15, at Prince George’s Community College from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Kimberley Jeffries-Leonard, Ph.D. (Psychology), a research scientist at MayaTech Corporation in Silver Spring will deliver the keynote address at 10 a.m. in Rennie Forum. The Poster Parade begins at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon discussion on research opportunities in psychology and other disciplines. The conference, funded by the American Psychological Association, the National Institute for General Medical Science, and by Title III, is free.

Students who are completing research projects this semester are strongly encouraged to participate in the poster session. To submit a research poster for possible inclusion, a student should send (1) a one hundred word description of the project, (2) the student’s name, address, phone, major, school, and e-mail address, and (3) the name of the faculty member who supervised the research. Submissions should be sent to Dr. Diane Finley at Finleydl@pg.cc.md.us by April 1. We plan to publish the abstracts of the student research papers in a brochure.

Faculty members are encouraged to bring students to the keynote address and poster presentation, which will include research from many different disciplines. Certificates of attendance will be given to all student participants. Publishers’ representatives have donated books to be given away at the end of the meeting.
