Q: Is there a GPA requirement? A: No, however it is competitive and students must show they are likely to complete their studies at Prince George’s Community College and at University of Maryland College Park.
Q: What is the application process? A: First download the Microsoft Word Application. Then fill it out and e-mail it lrawlings@pgcc.edu as an attachment. Please make the subject of your message “HILLMAN APPLICATION.”
Q: When is the deadline? A: For best consideration to join the program in Spring 2010, apply by October 23, 2009, however, we will keep accepting applications until the class is filled.
Q: Are there any class requirements and if so what are they? A: Hillman Entrepreneurs must take one class together each semester. The required course is selected to enhance students’ entrepreneurial knowledge Note, this course is usually offered in the afternoon.
Q: Why do I have to be available to take afternoon classes? A: Students in the program will be transferring to University of Mayrland, College Park which is geared to full-time students who take classes during the day. Hillman Entrepreneur applicants must show they have the flexibility in their schedules to matriculate at UMCP. Note, the required Hillman course is usually offered in the afternoon. .
Q: What determines the amount of the scholarship at University of Maryland College Park? A: It is based on financial need. Submitting a Federal Application for Free Student Aid is required to receive the scholarship at UMCP.
Q: Do you have to have a business? A: No, but it helps your application if you have experience or specific ideas about business ventures you either have already or would like to create.
Q: What if I already have a bachelor’s degree? Am I still eligible for the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program? A: No.
Q: What if I’m an international student? Am I eligible for the program? A: The program is for students who intend to stay in the Prince George’s County area and contribute to this community. International students with permanent residency are eligible to apply..
Q: What are the Qualifications? A: Students must be Maryland residents. Students must be enrolled (or eligible to enroll) at PGCC and taking college-level classes. Students must be in program of study which transfers to UMCP (pre-law not eligible) Students must be available for afternoon or evening Hillman course each semester. Students must be committed to additional programmatic and team-building activities. Students must make successful progression towards graduation with an associate’s degree in a transferable major at PGCC and towards graduation with a bachelor’s degree at UMCP. Students must have membership in or willingness to join one of the PGCC Collegian Centers.
Q: What majors do you except? A: Except for pre-law, students may choose any transferable course of study. To ensure transferability, look for courses of study which qualify for A.A., A.S. or for education majors, A.A.T.degrees.
Q: Who founded the Hillman Entrepreneurs Program? A: The impetus for the program came from David Hillman, founder and CEO of Southern Management Corporation. Mr. Hillman, a life-long resident of this area, started his property management company in 1965. Today, with approximately 25,000 units in the Mid-Atlantic region, Southern Management is a leader in the field.
