Course Description:

3 Credits.  Prerequisite: Acceptable reading level on the College’s placement test.  Three hours lectures, with an open computer lab for hands-on use of application software.  Also offered in a telecredit format and in an online format.


Computer Literacy is a combination of a survey course in computer information systems and a skills development course in Microsoft computer application packages.  Topics in the survey portion of the course include the development of the digital computer, methods of operation (hardware and software concepts), and the role of information technology in business organizations and in modern society.  Topics in the skills portion of the course include the utilization of software tools needed for competent computer use: Windows Operating System, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and the INTERNET.


The on-campus computer labs are used by students for exercises and class assignments that are designed to develop competency in the various software packages, prior to testing.  Students are also encouraged to use home systems if software is available.


ALL work on the computer should be saved in more than one place!  Please backup your work!!

q       Explain what computers are and how computers work (electronic processing of data into information).

q       Describe basic computer categories, components and concepts (sizes, central processing unit, memory, input/output and data storage).

q       Describe types of computer software (operating systems, utilities, programming languages and, applications) their uses and evolution.

q       Explain the impact (benefits and limitations) of computer technology and information systems on modern society.

q       Explain data security risks and computer viruses.

q       Describe basic hardware, software, and computer work environment risk management strategies.

q       Explain general data communications concepts and the basic principles of connectivity.

q       Describe the structure of the Internet; anticipated Internet evolution (Internet II) and how on-line resources are located.

q       Use the Taskbar and Desktop icons to access computer resources.

q       Format a 3½ “ floppy disk.

q       Scan disks for viruses.

q       List folders and files on any disk drive attached to a PC or LAN, including filenames, filetypes, file sizes, file creation/modification dates, and attributes.

q       Examine the properties of a file, of a folder and a disk.

q       Open a file from the Windows Explorer or My Computer.

q       Open application programs from the Start menu.

q       Copy and move contiguous as well as non-contiguous files and folders from one disk to another and from one folder to another.

q       Close an application or end a process.

q       Find a file or specific text using Start | Find.

q       Delete files and folders.


q       Open, save, print and close Word files.

q       Enter text using wordwrap; edit text efficiently.

q       Select text; use cut, copy, and paste; use bold, italics, and underline.

q       Identify and describe the basic components of a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet: title bar, menu bar, toolbars, formula bar, status bar, work area, rows, columns, cells, operating modes, values, labels, and formulas.

q       Enter labels, values, and formulas into a spreadsheet.

q       Select cells: use cut, copy, and paste; use bold, italics, and underline.

q       Select columns and rows; change width and height size.

q       Implement common spreadsheet functions such as sum, average, max, and min.

q       Create and print charts in the three basic chart types (line, bar, and pie).

q       Save a file under a new filename in a different location or different format

Students can earn a possible 1000 points.  Of these, 700 will be consistently earned for every CIS 101 section.  These 700 points will be standard for the entire course.  The other 300 points is based on the Instructor’s Selected Options.

Microsoft Word Assignment (90 points):

Part A:  Create a creative (3 column) brochure on one of the topics assigned by your instructor using Microsoft Word 2000.  You must include the following features: bold, italic, clip art, word art, underline, bullet list, center, borders or text box, 2 different font size and two different font styles.  Use the Spell Check feature too. Part B: Create a resume using Microsoft Word Resume Wizard.  Then, create a job cover letter using the Letter or Professional Wizard.  Print all three documents and save on a diskette.  Turn in the three documents with diskette in a two-pocket folder.


Microsoft Excel Assignment (60 points):

Office 2000 Book – Part A: Do page E1.06 – E1.53 Turn in your printouts and diskette.

                               Part B: Do page E2.04 – E2.57 Turn in your printouts and diskette.


All work must be in a two-pocket folder.

The students conduct the STUDENT REVIEWS.  All students will provide 5 questions and answers from each chapter (using the class notes as a guide) and a selected student will conduct the review.  Some students play Jeopardy using the computer concepts.  The choice is up to you.  The instructor needs to view the material before the review.  All typed Review Questions and Answers are due the class before the Review.






Group PresentationsYou will form a group of 4-5 students (depends on the size of the class) to create another Brochure using Microsoft Word 2000.  Each brochure must include the features, advantages, disadvantages, manufacturers names, best 10 popular names, and costs.  Each group must have a creative brochure and presentation. 


q       How to purchase a Digital Camera? Scanner? Printer?

If for any reason, a student withdraws from the class, the other students in the group must finish the project.  Each student is graded as a team.  Each group will discuss their skills and assign different tasks with deadlines to each person in the group.  The tasks consist of roles such as Editor/writer, Microsoft Word features producer, and Computer graphics.  If for any reason a member is not doing any work, this may cause that student to receive a zero for the project.  Turn in the following: Diskette and Brochure in a two-pocket folder.

Extra Credit is to help increase your grade where you may have fallen short on an assignment or exam.  It is recommended that each student perform the following tasks:

Each student will be assigned to a group before each Concept Exam.  Each group will earn points from different review activities in the class.  The more you do your work the better off the group is as a whole.  Those students who miss class regularly can hurt the group points.  Attendance is key.  At the end of the semester the points will be calculated and finalized with a point system.  Each student will be able to add points to their final grade.  Everyone in that group will get the same points.  We should all work together.  RECOMMENDATION: Students should study in groups and alone for exams on your own time.  Exchange numbers and work together.  We can all learn from one another.

·         You are expected to attend each class and be ON TIME.  The first 15 minutes and last 15 minutes is the most important time of the class.  It is your responsibility to get the missing notes from a classmate.

·         Absences with a written medical, judicial or occupation excuse will be counted as attendance.   The official documentation is due the next class you attend or your excuse will be counted as unexcused.



·         Aug 25-29; 8:30am – 9pm (Mon.-Thurs.); 8:30am –7pm (Fri.) Sept 2-5; 9am-8pm (Tues.-Thurs.) 9am-7pm (Fri.).



·         Any student caught looking at someone else’s exam or cheating in any way will receive a zero (0) for that exam/assignment.



·         You are expected to be quiet while the lecture is in progress, as well as when another student is participating in the classroom discussion.  Also, if you come late or leave early, please do so quietly. Do Not “POP” GUM in Class.



·         Smoking is prohibited in all buildings on campus.

·         Accokeek Microcomputer Lab & Lanham Room 112 Lab is available to all students. Windows, Word & Excel Test in Lanham _____.

·         All students MUST have diskettes with labels during the Lab sessions.



·         The following radio and television stations are notified and carry the announcements regarding college closings or delayed openings: TV channels 4, 5, 7, 9, WMAL, WPGC, WASH, WRC, WTOP, WGAY, WAVA, WHUR, and WKYS. 



·         All written assignments must be typed and hand-in on time.  Otherwise, you will receive a ZERO.

·         All assignments must be backed up on at least two diskettes.  NO EXCUSES when the assignment is DUE.

·         If you are absent from class, you will be held responsible for all material covered and assignments DUE.  No Assignments will be accepted after the due date.  (Automatic zero for that assignment)

·         An exam can be taken early if necessary.  However, there will be no make-up exams.  If you miss an exam the next exam will be counted double.  You must take the last exam. 

·         Three non-cumulative exams will be given from the Computer Concepts textbook (Format options: multiple choice, true-false, matching, fill in the blanks, essays and/or short answers).  Don’t ask the instructor for a pencil because you are always prepared for class.

·         You are at risk if you print out your assignments the day before it is DUE.  Problems do occur.  Printers! Computers! Diskettes! This is a warning!  Remember – NO EXCUSES! Assignments can be turned in early

·         Any assignment or note that is placed in my mailbox must be signed and dated by the Department Secretary (time must be included).  Do not slide any items under any office door.

·         All diskettes must have a label on it with your name, class, reference number, and semester/year.




·         All students will participant in class (individual & group work).

·         No food, music playing, smoking, profanity, loud conversations, and visitors. 

·         Tape recorders may be used for recording lectures only.

·         Cell phones, pagers and watch alarms must be non-audible.

·         A FREE PGCC Student Handbook can be picked up at the College Life Office in Largo Student Center (near the Bookstore).
