EGL 100. Introduction to Composition. 4 Credits
Preparation for EGL 101. Grammar and punctuation, sentence construction, paragraph
development, and short essay writing with computer laboratory experience. Web-based
section available. Prerequisite: Writing proficiency level. Does not fulfill English
requirements for graduation or transfer. Not open to students who have completed EGL 101.
EGL 101. Composition I: Expository Writing. 3 Credits
University-parallel freshman English. Fundamentals of effective prose writing, including
required essays and a research paper. Web-based section available. Prerequisite: Writing
proficiency level, or EGL 100.

EGL 101H. Honors Composition I. 3 Credits
Honors-level version of EGL 101. Expository and argumentative writing, and research
techniques. Credit may not be received for both EGL 101 and EGL 101H. Prerequisite:
Writing proficiency level or permission of the instructor. Writing sample
required.

EGL 102. Composition II: Writing About Literature. 3 Credits
Second semester composition using literature as the subject for discussion and writing.
Study various kinds of literature (e.g., drama, poetry, short story) or a single genre
such as short story. Web-based section available. EGL 110, 132, or 134 also fulfill the
Composition II requirement. Prerequisite: EGL 101 with C or better.
EGL 102H. Honors Composition II.
Second semester composition option for honors-level students. Writing incisive essays
about sophisticated works of literature. Prerequisite: EGL 101H with A or B, or EGL 101
with A.
EGL 104. Media Writing. 3 Credits
History of mass media; study and writing of news articles, editorials, columns, reviews,
radio and TV scripts. Prerequisite: Writing proficiency level.
EGL 110. Composition II: Writing About Issues and Ideas. 3 Credits
Second semester composition. Reading, analyzing, and writing about contemporary issues,
demonstrating clear reasoning and persuasive writing skills. Web-based section available.
EGL 102, 132, or 134 also fulfill the Composition requirement. Prerequisite: EGL
101 with C or better.
EGL 121. Grammar and Usage I. 3 Credits
Introduction to standard American English grammar. Analysis and editing of sentences
according to major grammar and punctuation rules.
EGL 132. Composition II: Writing for Business. 3 Credits
Second semester composition. Students develop and sharpen critical thinking and writing
skills, applying them to materials from business and the professions with an emphasis on
evidence-based analysis, evaluation, interpretation and persuasive presentation. EGL 102,
110, or 134 also fulfill the Composition II requirement. Prerequisite: EGL 101
with C or better.
EGL 134. Composition II: Writing About Technical Topics. 3 Credits
Second semester composition. Includes preparation of various types of technical business,
government, and scientific communications, including resumes; progress, examination, and
recommendation reports; proposals; and memoranda. EGL 102, 110, or 132 also fulfill the
Composition II requirement. Prerequisite: EGL 101 with C or better.
EGL 215. Introduction to Creative Writing. 3 Credits
Techniques of writing fiction, poetry, and plays with critique of student work.
E-Mail section available in Fall 1999. Prerequisite: EGL 101. Does not
fulfill general education requirement.
