EGL 201. British Literature from the Anglo-Saxon Period Through the 18th
Century. 3 Credits
British literature to around 1800 and its historical and cultural background.
Prerequisite EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 203. British Literature of the 19th and 20th Centuries. 3 Credits
British literature from the Romantic period to modern times and its historical
and cultural background. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 205. American Literature from the Beginnings to the Late 19th Century. 3
Credits
American literature from the colonial period to around 1880 and its social and
intellectual backgrounds. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 207. American Literature from the Late 19th Century to the Present. 3
Credits
American literature from 1880 to the present and its social and intellectual
backgrounds. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 209. World Literature from Ancient Times Through the Middle Ages. 3 Credits
Study of world literary masterpieces from ancient times through the medieval
period. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 211. World Literature from the Renaissance to the Present. 3 Credits
Study of world literary masterpieces from the Renaissance to the present.
Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 213. African American Literature. 3 Credits
Development of the African American folk tradition and its influence on black
writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 214. African American Literature II. 3 Credits
A study of African American literature from the early 1900s to the present.
Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 217 Major American Writers. 3 Credits
Study of major American writers, selected each semester from among: Poe and
Hawthorne, Fitzgerald and Hemingway, Thoreau and Twain, Hughes and Wright; and Edith
Wharton, Willa Cather, and Toni Morrison. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 221. Shakespeare. 3 Credits
Analysis of a selection of Shakespeare's plays. Prerequisite:
EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 223. Children's Literature. 3 Credits
Analysis of the content and quality of works from nursery
level through the elementary grades. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132
or 134.
EGL 225. Literature for Teenagers. 3 Credits
Analysis of the content and quality of literature written for adolescents.
Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 232. Literature and Film. 3 Credits
Analysis of film based on literature. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132. 134.
(Honors sections require an "A" in EGL 102 or permission of the instructor.)

Examination of literatures from around the world written
during the twentieth century. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 237. Studies in Biblical Literature: The Old Testament. 3 Credits
Major ideas and characters of the Old Testament and its analysis as literature.
Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 239. Studies in Biblical Literature: The New Testament. 3 Credits
Analysis of the Bible as literature with emphasis on major ideas and characters
of the New Testament. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 241. Mythology, Legend, and Folklore. 3 Credits
Overview of myth, legend, and folklore tracing themes and motifs common to
Western and other literatures. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
EGL 250. Women in Literature. 3 Credits
Women's voices over the centuries expressed autobiographically, and in short
stories, plays, and poems. Prerequisite: EGL 102 or 110 or 132 or 134.
