The PRAXIS Exams

What are the PRAXIS exams?
The Praxis exams are assessments for teacher candidates that are administered by the Educational Testing Services (ETS). There are two main parts to the test - Praxis I, the Academic Skills Test (reading, writing, mathematics) and Praxis II that consists of separate content and pedagogy tests. Passing scores on Praxis I in Maryland are: 177(Math), 177(Reading), 173 (Writing), or a combined score of 527.

Who must take the PRAXIS exams?
A.A.T. students must take PRAXIS I after completing 45 credit hours or earlier if ready. Passing the exam is a graduation requirement.

All conditional elementary teachers must pass Praxis I and Praxis II # 10014 and the elementary pedagogy exam in order to obtain standard certification.

All provisional secondary teachers must pass Praxis I and II in their content area and in content pedagogy in order to obtain standard certification.

Resident teachers need to pass PRAXIS I and the content portion of PRAXIS II before being admitted to the Resident Teacher Program.

All students who are transferring to four year institutions need to pass the PRAXIS I as part of the application process.

How do I register for the exams?
Exams and locations are scheduled by ETS. You can obtain more information and register by going online to http://www.ets.org/praxis
You can take the Praxis I exam on a computer at a Pro-Metric Center. Call 1-800-853-6773 to make an appointment.

How do I prepare for the exams?
Prince George’s County Public Schools offers free preparation classes for its employees. Contact Robin Bowyer 301-780-6867 at the Office of Professional Training and Advisement.
A.A.T. students will take practice exams in their math classes and in Foundations of Education.

A good book to buy is "The Best Test Preparation for the Praxis Series" by REA Research & Education Association. It has a pink cover. It has four complete exams in it with explanations.
Learning Express and ARCO are also recommended.
