Courses for Certification
Credit Count Pathway

Individuals who have a Bachelor’s degree but do not have the necessary background in education can obtain standard teaching certification by:
1) taking specified courses
2) passing the PRAXIS EXAM I and II and
3) teaching for one year under a conditional certificate.

If upon examination by a certification officer of the County Public Schools, all the needed general education courses have been completed, then the following list contains the courses you will need to take. Courses are offered at convenient times during weekends and evenings.

Elementary (1- 8th Grade) Certification

EDU 205 - Assessment of Students
EDU 210 - Processes and Acquisition of Reading
EDU 211 - Instruction of Reading
EDU 212 - Assessment of Reading
EDU 213 - Materials for Reading
EDU 240 - Elementary Methods
PSY 203 - Child Psychology
PSY 206 - Educational Psychology

Secondary (7-12th Grade) Certification
EDU 203 - Introduction to Special Education
EDU 205 - Assessment of Students
EDU 214 - Teaching Reading in the Content Areas I
EDU 215 - Teaching Reading in the Content Areas II
EDU 240 - Secondary Methods
PSY 204 - Adolescent Psychology
PSY 206 - Educational Psychology

Note that school systems in Maryland will only hire individuals on a conditional certificate if they cannot find a certified teacher to fill the position. The only counties that hire large numbers of people under a conditional certificate are Prince George's and Baltimore City.
You can request an evaluation of your credentials from the Maryland State Department of Education.

In order to do so you must:
1 Complete Praxis I in Reading, Writing and Math
2. Compile all your transcripts
3. Write a cover letter and state your name, soc. security number, mailing address, and the area of certification you are seeking.
4. Mail all the above to:
