Disability Support Service

     Students in need of classroom accommodations must provide current medical or educational documentation and meet with DSS staff in order to arrange appropriate accommodations.
     Students who need interpreters, scribes, or recorded materials must register and submit a paid receipt to the Disability Support Services Office no later than one month prior to the start of classes in order to avoid possible delays in delivery of needed services. 
     The following services are provided:  (1) advisement and counseling services (academic advisement; classroom accommodations; intake/interview; placement testing accommodations as needed; disability-related counseling);
(2) accommodations and auxiliary services (interpreters/readers/scribes; note-taking services; recorded textbooks or enlarged print materials; extended time and/or permission to tape lectures); and (3) support services (liaison with community agencies; access to TTY, Zoomtext software, and Jaws for Windows).

Vocational Support Services

One-hour workshops are offered each semester, covering such topics as organizational skills, time management, effective study skills, graphing calculator, test-taking, and note-taking.  The workshops are free.  Contact the Vocational Support Services Office early in the semester to ascertain the dates, times, and locations of the workshops.

Tutoring Centers:

(1) General Tutoring Center

     The General Tutoring Center provides instructional support to all students.  Help with study skills, time management, learning styles, and related issues is available.  Services include individual tutoring by appointment, walk-in assistance (when a tutor is available), guided small-group study sessions, and assistance for related computer software.

(2) Writing Center

     The Writing Center offers one-on-one tutoring for all students who are working on any writing assignment in any course.  Faculty tutors work with individuals to develop and sharpen writing skills. They help students discover topics and generate ideas, support ideas with specific details, organize material, incorporate and document sources, work on style, and edit work. Handouts on various aspects of writing and online tutoring are available.  Call 301-322-0589 for more information.
(3) Speech Center

     The Speech Center offers students personal vocal coaching on public speaking delivery or USA professional diction.  Services include individual tutoring by appointment or walk-in assistance.

Counseling Services and Health Center:
(1) Personal Counseling

     Counseling is offered to assist with personal and interpersonal problems that may be impacting on the ability to succeed in college.
(2) Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention Program

     Information is provided about available counseling, treatment, rehabilitation, and reentry programs for drug and alcohol abuse. (3) Health Center

     Students are provided with free treatment for minor illnesses and injuries with standard first aid and nonprescription medications.  Blood pressure readings and monitoring are also offered.

     Help, information, and services are offered to active duty servicemembers and to veterans for the purpose of facilitating their degree attainment.

     Students are offered a variety of programs and events that highlight diversity.  International students are provided opportunities to serve as guest speakers in PGCC classes.  In time, study group and conversation practice sessions will be convened for the benefit of International students.
