Prince George’s Community College

Marlboro Gallery Juried Sculpture Exhibition

August 18, 2008 - October 9, 2008

Prospectus

Prince George’s Community College is proud to sponsor a national juried sculpture exhibition in the Marlboro Gallery.  The exhibition has been made possible through a generous donation from an anonymous patron of the arts. This donation has allowed Prince George’s Community College the opportunity to give sculptors a large venue in which to show their work and to waive the application fee normally charged in juried exhibitions.   Cash prizes totaling $3500 will be awarded including the $2000 Kari Beims Sculpture Award for Best in Show.  Kristen Hileman, Associate Curator at the Hirshhorn Museum will jury the show.

About our Juror

Kristen Hileman is the Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.  She has organized one-person Directions exhibitions of the work of cai Guo-Qiang (2004 – 2005), Jim Hodges (2005-2006), and Oliver Herring (2006).  She is currently organizing Anne Truitt, the first full museum retrospective of that artist’s work since 1974.  Hileman is working with fellow Hirshhorn curator Anne Ellegood on a film and video exhibition, titled Realisms, which will open in June 2008.  She was an adjunct professor at George Washington University and the Corcoran Collage of Art and Design. Before coming to the Hirshhorn, Hileman served as the curator of the Arlington Arts Center, where she organized exhibitions of work by artists from the Mid-Atlantic region.

About the Marlboro Gallery

The Marlboro Gallery opened in 1975.   It is located on the main campus of Prince George's Community College in Marlboro Hall with the Art and Music Department. The 2150 square foot gallery was built to accommodate large artwork. There is a 12’ ceiling on half the gallery and a 30’ ceiling with large sloping windows on the other half. Marlboro Gallery was established to expose our students, faculty, staff, and the local community to contemporary and historic fine art. The gallery also hosts concerts, lectures and panel discussions related to fine art.  Each October, the gallery sponsors an Annual Art Faculty Exhibition. The last exhibition of each semester is a Juried Student Art Exhibition. In 2007 Marlboro Gallery presented Images and Their Power in Byzantium, the first Byzantine monumental fresco-painting exhibition in the Washington DC area.
